Lepadella triptera

No recorded common name

Lepadella triptera belongs to Rotifera, the so-called "wheel animals," a group of microscopic aquatic invertebrates named for the ring of beating cilia around their mouths that can resemble a spinning wheel under the microscope.

This species sits within the class Eurotatoria, order Ploima, and family Lepadellidae, placing it among a large assemblage of rotifers known for their armored, shell-like lorica. Like other members of its family, it is far too small to see without magnification, and most of what is known about it comes from taxonomic and occurrence records rather than detailed field study.

Even at this tiny scale, rotifers like L. triptera play a part in the freshwater and semi-aquatic microhabitats they occupy, making them a small but persistent thread in aquatic food webs wherever they are found.

Distribution and Habitat

Records of Lepadella triptera compiled from GBIF occurrence data show observations spread across nearly every month of the year, with the highest count in January (12 records) and secondary peaks in April (10) and May (9). Numbers fall through the middle of the year, dropping to a single record in November before rising again in December.

These figures are presence observations only. They do not measure abundance, population size, or describe the species' complete range. The apparent winter and spring peaks may reflect when observers were most active in the field rather than a true seasonal cycle in the organism itself, so the pattern should be read as a tentative signal rather than a settled picture of its distribution or habitat use.
