Podosphaera aphanis

No recorded common name

Podosphaera aphanis is not a single species but a species complex of powdery mildews, found across the world wherever its host plants grow. It belongs to the family Erysiphaceae, within the phylum Ascomycota, and sensu stricto infects only plants in the genus Alchemilla.

Its tight host-specificity and wide distribution make it a useful example of how powdery mildews track their hosts around the globe rather than any particular climate or region.

Fruiting Body and Identification

The clearest sign of Podosphaera aphanis is the thin, white, irregular patches it forms on the leaves of its host plant. These powdery blotches spread across the leaf surface rather than forming a solid coating, giving infected leaves a mottled, dusty look.

Like most members of the Erysiphaceae, this fungus is highly host-specific: P. aphanis infects only one plant genus, a trait shared across the complex even after its 2025 split into several species. This specificity itself is often the most reliable clue to identification, since the fungus will not appear on unrelated plants nearby.

Distribution and Habitat

Podosphaera aphanis occurs worldwide, its range tracking the distribution of its host plants rather than any fixed geographic zone. Wherever the host genus grows, the fungus can potentially be found alongside it.

Observation records show a strong seasonal pattern, with reports climbing sharply from spring into a pronounced peak during the summer months before tapering off through autumn and into winter. This pattern likely reflects when the fungus is most visibly active on host foliage, though the underlying presence data cannot be read as a measure of abundance or as a complete picture of its range.

Fun Facts

  1. The fungus was first described in 1819 by Wallroth under the name Alphitomorpha aphanis, before being moved into the genus Podosphaera by Braun and Takamatsu in 2000.
  2. In 2025, taxonomists split the Podosphaera aphanis complex into several distinct species, one of which was named Podosphaera rubi-spectabilis.
