The species occurs across eight countries in total, with North America accounting for the vast majority of observations. In the United States, common milkweed is widespread throughout eastern and central regions, from the Atlantic coast westward to the Great Plains. Canadian populations are concentrated in southern provinces where climatic conditions favour establishment.
