Leccinum duriusculum is a bolete, a mushroom whose spores are released from a layer of pores on the underside of the cap rather than from gills. It belongs to the genus Leccinum in the family Boletaceae, order Boletales, class Agaricomycetes.
The species sits within the Basidiomycota, one of the large fungal phyla that includes most familiar gilled mushrooms and boletes.
Fruiting Body and Identification
Like other boletes, Leccinum duriusculum bears its spores in a tube layer that opens as small pores on the underside of the cap, which separates it from gilled mushrooms. That pore layer is the feature that places it among the boletes.
Distribution and Habitat
Leccinum duriusculum is most often seen from July through October. Its presence peaks in September, with August and October also strongly represented, and it drops sharply by November, staying low through the winter months.

Fun Facts
- The species was first described in 1874 as Boletus duriusculus by Hungarian–Croatian mycologist Stephan Schulzer von Müggenburg.
- Rolf Singer transferred it to the genus Leccinum in 1947, which is the name it carries today.
