Koeleria vallesiana

No recorded common name

Koeleria vallesiana, known as the Somerset hair grass, carries a name that points to one small corner of its range even though the species itself spans much of western Europe and reaches into North Africa and temperate Asia.

It belongs to the grass family Poaceae, within the class Liliopsida, and grows as a perennial across temperate grassland and rocky habitats. Its quiet presence in dry, open ground makes it an easy plant to overlook, yet its wide geographic footprint and its place in the diets of numerous birds and insects give it a larger ecological story than its modest size suggests.

Identification and Appearance

Koeleria vallesiana is recognized by its tufted growth habit, forming dense clumps of narrow, wiry leaves typical of the genus Koeleria. As a member of Poaceae, it produces the slender, cylindrical flowering spikes characteristic of hair grasses, held above the basal foliage on upright stems.

Distribution and Habitat

Koeleria vallesiana occurs natively across western and west-central Europe, including France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland, and extends into northwest Africa in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. Its overall range has been summarized as spanning from western and west-central Europe to northwest Africa, within a temperate climate zone.

Observation records collected through the year show activity peaking sharply in the late spring and early summer months, with the highest counts in May and June before tapering through the rest of the year. Because these figures reflect presence observations rather than abundance or a complete range, they should be read cautiously, but the pattern is consistent with a species most conspicuous, and perhaps most actively recorded, during its main growing season.

Growth and Form

Koeleria vallesiana grows as a perennial, persisting from year to year rather than completing its life cycle in a single season. This perennial habit allows it to form the dense, long-lived tufts characteristic of hair grasses, re-sprouting from its base across multiple growing seasons.

Ecology and Relationships

Koeleria vallesiana serves as a food source for a wide range of birds, reflecting its role as forage within open grassland and rocky habitats. Recorded consumers include finches and buntings such as the redpoll (Acanthis flammea), citril finch (Carduelis citrinella), common rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus), and greenfinch (Chloris chloris), alongside the skylark (Alauda arvensis) and gamebirds like the rock partridge (Alectoris graeca).

Waterfowl, including the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and greylag goose (Anser anser), along with the stock dove (Columba oenas), have also been recorded feeding on it. Beyond birds, the bush-cricket Barbitistes obtusus has been recorded consuming the grass, showing that it supports insect herbivores as well as a broad spread of avian species.

Fun Facts

  1. The species carries numerous historical synonyms, including Poa vallesiana, Sesleria variegata, Aira valesiaca, Airochloa pubescens, Brachystylus setaceus, Festuca splendens, and Koeleria alpicola, reflecting more than two centuries of shifting botanical classification since it was first described in 1782.
