Pyrola chlorantha

No recorded common name

The greenflowered wintergreen, Pyrola chlorantha, grows across a circumboreal range stretching through the northern latitudes of both Eurasia and North America.

It belongs to the genus Pyrola in the family Ericaceae, a group of low, evergreen woodland herbs. Its wide distribution and quiet presence in pine forests make it a reliable indicator of the boreal and temperate woodlands it inhabits.

Identification and Appearance

Pyrola chlorantha, known by its scientific name, is recognized by its pale greenish-white flowers arranged along a slender, upright stalk that rises above a low rosette of rounded, leathery leaves.

The flowers nod downward from the stem, giving the plant its characteristic drooping, bell-like appearance, and their subdued green-white coloration distinguishes it from other Pyrola species with brighter white or pink blooms.

The basal leaves form a compact evergreen rosette close to the ground, rounded to oval in shape, with a smooth, somewhat glossy surface.

Distribution and Habitat

Pyrola chlorantha favors pine forests, particularly stands of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica, growing at elevations below 1,000 meters.

Its native range is exceptionally broad, spanning subarctic and temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. It occurs from Alaska, Yukon, and British Columbia across Canada to Newfoundland, and south into the United States as far as California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Virginia. In Eurasia it is found from Norway and the Baltic States through Central and Eastern Europe, across Russia and Siberia to Kamchatka, and south to Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and the Caucasus.

Observation records through the year show the highest number of reported sightings in June and July, suggesting this is when the plant is most conspicuous or actively observed, likely coinciding with its flowering period, though these counts reflect presence reports rather than actual abundance or population size.

Growth and Form

Pyrola chlorantha grows as a perennial, rhizomatous geophyte, spreading and persisting by underground rhizomes rather than relying solely on seed.

This growth habit allows the plant to survive within the leaf litter and understory of pine forests, sending up its low rosette and flowering stalk from the same rootstock over multiple seasons.

Ecology and Relationships

Pyrola chlorantha lives within the understory of pine forests, particularly stands of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica, where it forms part of the low woodland vegetation.

Its flowers attract solitary bees, including species in the genera Andrena, Halictus, and Osmia, though a visit alone does not confirm that pollination occurs. The plant's leaves and foliage are eaten by a range of birds, most notably finches and related songbirds such as redpolls, linnets, and greenfinches, as well as game birds like grouse and partridge, and waterfowl including mallards and greylag geese.

This broad set of avian feeders, spanning songbirds, gamebirds, and waterfowl, suggests the plant forms an incidental but recurring part of the diet for woodland and forest-edge birds.

Fun Facts

  1. Pyrola chlorantha carries the common name greenflowered wintergreen, a reference to its pale green blossoms rather than a bright floral display.
  2. Its leaves are recorded as food for an unusually wide range of birds, from finches and grouse to ducks and geese, spanning very different feeding styles within a single woodland habitat.
