Yuhina brunneiceps

No recorded common name

Least Concern

The Taiwan yuhina is a small songbird found nowhere else on Earth but the island of Taiwan, making it a true endemic species.

A member of the Zosteropidae family within the order Passeriformes, this bird is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN. Its combination of a distinctive brown crest, gregarious habits, and endemic status makes it a small but notable part of Taiwan's highland forests.

Identification and Appearance

The Taiwan yuhina's most distinctive feature is its chocolate brown crest paired with a black beard stripe descending from its beak, a combination that sets it apart from other members of its genus.

The species measures 12 to 13 centimeters in length and weighs about 0.0125 kilograms, placing it firmly among small songbirds. Its back, wings and tail are dark ash brown, while its lower breast is noticeably lighter in color, creating a subtle two-toned effect along its body.

While the Yuhina genus shares a broadly similar body plan across its members, the Taiwan yuhina's particular coloration pattern is described as rather distinctive within the group, helping observers tell it apart from related species.

Distribution and Habitat

The Taiwan yuhina occupies hill forests across a range of about 13,700 square kilometers, entirely within Taiwan. It favors elevations between 1,000 and 3,200 meters, but is most commonly encountered between 1,500 and 2,500 meters, descending to lower altitudes during winter.

It keeps to a semi-open, lower forest layer and is notably gregarious, active and tame, frequently joining mixed flocks alongside tits. These flocks maintain a constant soft chatter while feeding, and the species' own call, rendered as "twi-MI-chiu," resembles the phrase "We MEET you."

Observation records through the year show a clear seasonal pattern, with counts rising sharply in the early months and peaking around March before declining through the rest of the year, suggesting greater presence or detectability during that period, though these figures reflect presence records rather than actual population size.
